The Paris agreement, negotiated in 2015, was spurred by the overwhelming global scientific consensus that rising global temperatures over the last several decades are caused by man-made activity. Only two countries in the world have abstained from the accord until today. America now stands with Syria and Nicaragua as those who have abdicated their responsibility to this planet and it's inhabitants.
Trump's reasoning for quitting the Paris Agreement, none of which is factually accurate, is that the US involvement in the agreement would harm our economy due to the treaty's call on members to voluntary pledge to reduce emissions.
The truth of the matter is that removing us from the agreement might very well cost America billions of dollars as green energy is a burgeoning industry. As a result when developing countries look to power their cities and businesses with cheap clean renewable energy they will turn to China and the UK to fulfill their needs instead of the US.
So despite the paris agreement being completely voluntary and possibly being a boon to our economy Trump has deemed it necessary to extricate us from the treaty...
"I am fighting every day for the great people of this country. Therefore, in order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and it's citizens, the U.S. will withdraw from the paris climate accord." Trump continued "The Paris Climate Accord is simply the latest example of Washington entering an agreement that disadvantages the U.S. leaving American workers, who I love, and tax payers to absorb the cost in terms of lost jobs and lower wages and vastly diminished economic reduction,"
Here is Trump's entire statement from the Rose Garden...
During the statement Trump never discussed climate science or the dire consequences predicted by nearly all peer-reviewed scientist that emissions from burning fossil fuels, industrial farming and deforestation will irreversibly damage our planet by the end of the century.
FACT CHECK: The United States has emitted more carbon dioxide per capita into the atmosphere than any other country.
Fortunately the agreement won't fall apart overnight as the rules of the pact will prevent Trump from formally exiting the Paris Agreement for another four years.
In spite of Trump's short sighted and nonsensical mistake China and the European Union are preparing to publicly recommit to the agreement as experts say China appears to be reducing emissions ahead of schedule.
Italy, France and Germany said on Thursday they regretted Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord and dismissed his suggestion that the global pact could be revised.
Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron said in a rare joint statement...
"We deem the momentum generated in Paris in December 2015 irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement cannot be renegotiated since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies,"
It's good to hear the adults in the room talk like this because they are the ones who will be reaping the benefits of the economic opportunities opened up by Trump's choice to abandon the agreement.
As previously mentioned Trump technically can't begin to withdraw from the agreement until November 2019 at the earliest... Hopefully he won't last that long.
