Trump's been bitten by the war bug!
Ever since he's been talking about nuking North Korea he seems to have a real itch for dragging the US into a war.
At yet another impromptu mini-press conference at his Bedminster, New Jersey private golf club Donald Trump, after being asked a seemingly innocuous question about the political crisis in Venezuela, threatened military intervention!?!?
Trump told the stunned reporters...
“The people are suffering and they are dying. We have many options for Venezuela including a possible military option if necessary,”
When Trump was asked if U.S. forces would be leading any operations in Venezuela he declined to provide details only saying...
“We don’t talk about it but a military operation - a military option - is certainly something that we could pursue,”
This surprise escalation in rhetoric came as a huge surprise in light of Washington’s relatively stayed response to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's authoritarian power grab.
Though Venezuela has appeared to slide towards a more volatile stage of unrest in recent days after Maduro installed an all-powerful new legislative body, Trump's hawkish stance is still hard to comprehend.
It also seems to play right into the beleaguered Maduro's hands as he has long said U.S. officials were planning an invasion.
One thing that might clue us into Trump's thought process is the fact that Venezuela has oil... Lots and lots of oil. As a matter of fact it supplies America with about 740,000 barrels per day of oil.
So there's that.
In any event the Pentagon said it had not received any orders on Venezuela from the White House and the government in Caracas has not yet responded to Trump’s threat.
The US sanctioned Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and other Venezuelan officials issued on July 31st but has not placed any on Venezuela's oil industry.
